I WANNA BE A REPUBLICAN

Hosting a mock Republican fundraiser in drag, The Kinsey Sicks, a barbershop quartet, perform musical comedy as GOP wives. Ridiculing the party with lighthearted but biting satire, the live show goes after all things conservative from  a slutty drag queen perpective - a Republican slutty drag queen perspective. That's where the fun lies.

It works because it's so over the top, despite the surprisingly small set up. With only a simple backdrop, a podium and a few chairs, the Kinseys string together over an hour of clever jabs and extraordinarily well-performed barbershop tunes. They maintain excellent audience participation throughout, making the show feel like a comedy special.

The show is wisely arranged, featuring individual testimonials from each member - Rachel, Winnie, Trixie and Trampolina - as they await George W. Bush's "first coherent speech on public policy," interspersed with the news of the day, intentionally bad puns and plenty of trash. It's to be expected for a show that was on the road a year before filming, but there's not a sour note in the fabulous production.

Believe it or not, the only people who wouldn't like this show are Republicans, and that's debatable. Detesters of musicals or barbershop can be easily won over by the sheer charm that these four ladies (well...) exude on stage. There's enough sass to fill a concert hall, and the material is always tongue-in-cheek, given their ludicrous get-ups.

Special features include a making-of, four additional songs, bloopers, commentary and more. Highly recommended.
